Samwise was nearing the end of his long quest with Frodo, feeling lost and forsaken when he looked up and saw that starlight which gave him hope again. (See yesterday’s post.)
What is it about beauty that brings hope?
Destruction is the result of sin at work in the world, and in us. Destruction brings despair with it, because it speaks of only loss and lack. There is nothing good or hopeful about destruction.
But beauty brings hope to our hearts. Beauty is the result of love. Our hearts know this even if our heads do not. Because beauty can only exist where goodness and truth are found; in other words, where God is found.
Despite all the destruction sin has brought into our lives and into this world, it cannot eradicate beauty or the love it springs from. And when we encounter beauty, we are reminded of the triumph of goodness, the triumph of truth, the triumph of light. Ultimately we are seeing evidence of the existence and triumph of love.
Beauty is both evidence and reminder.
