Do you want to watch a TV show about finding a house? Decorating a house? Building a house? Remodeling a house? Restoring a house? You have your pick:
Flip or Flop.
Love it or List it.
And many more.
All are shows built around the idea of finding or creating a perfect, beautiful home. Why are these types of shows popular? Why do we long to live in the beauty of well-designed spaces?
Because we were made for Eden. Or more accurately, Eden was made for us. God’s desire and design is for us to live in paradise. We lost our intended home because we didn’t believe God had our best at heart. We chose to leave His path and forge one of our own.
We long to live in beauty because we are longing for the beauty of our original dwelling place, the beauty laid out by God Himself, the beauty that flows from God’s heart, the beauty that God IS.
We are a long way from Eden, and we are seeking beauty too often in the outward, visible creation rather than in the hearts of God and other people, but that doesn’t mean our longing is wrong or bad. Our desire is good and right. We just need to dig a bit deeper and recognize the true source of all beauty, and the true source of the fulfillment of our desire for beauty—God Himself.
Because our hearts still recognize the truth—beauty means “home.”
